Ford Transit Cargo Vans for Work in Maine
The Transit is the van you buy when the shape of the job is specific. Three roof heights, two wheelbases, three cargo-van lengths, four weight ratings, single or dual rear wheels — it is less a model than a matrix, and the point is that you can land on the exact box the trade needs instead of the nearest one that fits.
It is also the only van we sell that offers all-wheel drive behind a gas engine, which in Maine is often the question that settles it. We keep a small number at Quirk Ford Augusta and order the rest to spec.
Every unit counted here is on the ground today. We don’t list in-transit or factory-ordered vehicles on this website. Ask the fleet team what’s inbound.
What it means for your business
You configure it rather than pick a trim
Low, medium and high roof; 130 or 148 inches of wheelbase; three cargo lengths out to an extended body; four weight ratings; single or dual rear wheels. There is no trim ladder to climb — the decision is the box. Start with the two measurements that actually strand a van: your bay door and the lowest garage on the route. Overall height runs from about 82.4 inches at the low roof to 110.4 at the high roof, and that spread decides more than any option on the sheet.
AWD that does not cost you the load floor
Ford built the Intelligent AWD system in without raising the load floor or the seat height, so traction does not come out of how easily the van loads. That is the distinction worth paying attention to: the Sprinter also offers all-wheel drive, but only behind a diesel and at the cost of some payload. For a van that is loaded and unloaded thirty times a day, an inch of floor height is a real, daily cost — and this is the one that does not charge you it.
The biggest numbers in our van range, in one specific build
Maximum payload on the Transit is 5,103 lbs and maximum cargo volume is 487.3 cubic feet behind the first row — both higher than anything else on this site, including the Express 3500. Both figures belong to one build: the T-350HD High Roof, extended length, rear-wheel drive, dual rear wheels. Nothing we have on the ground is close to it. Plan against the number for the van you are actually buying, which is the one on its doorjamb label.
Electrical capacity is the spec upfitters ask about
A 250-amp alternator is standard, and dual 250-amp alternators, dual 70 amp-hr AGM batteries, an auxiliary fuse panel with a high-spec interface connector and a modified vehicle wiring system are all available. If the van will run a liftgate, an inverter, scene lighting or refrigeration, this is the box to tick at order time — adding the capacity afterwards is expensive and never as tidy.
Factory-fit or aftermarket is really a timing decision
Ford fits trade packages — shelves, bins, equipment mounts — on the line, which shortens order-to-delivery and keeps the van on one invoice. That is the better answer when you can wait for a build. When you need a shelved van this month, our Express stock usually wins, because most of it arrives already racked. Decide which constraint you are under before you decide which van.
Powertrain & capability
Manufacturer figures for a properly equipped truck. Your specific build will rate differently — confirm the ratings on the unit before you buy a trailer or a body to match it.

- Standard
- Port and direct injection. The volume engine, on a 10-speed automatic with SelectShift.

- Drive
- Rear-wheel drive · available Intelligent AWD

- Fuel capacity
- 25 gal standard · 31 gal available
- Capless fill, midship tank. The larger tank earns its keep across a wide service territory.
- Electrical
- 250-amp alternator standard
- Dual alternators, dual AGM batteries and an auxiliary fuse panel are options — spec them if the van powers equipment.

Which trim for the work
Trim on a work truck is a budget decision, not a luxury one. What we actually have on the ground is marked.
The Transit is sold as a configuration, not a trim ladder — what varies is roof height, length, weight rating and drivetrain. Everything we stock is a base cargo van; the specification is where the choices live.
Bodies that go on this chassis
Two routes on a Transit. Factory trade packages put shelving, bins and mounts in on the line, which shortens order-to-delivery and keeps everything on one invoice — and Vehicle Integration System 2.0 plus the auxiliary fuse panel give an upfitter a clean electrical interface to work from. Aftermarket is still the answer for a bespoke layout, or when you need the van sooner than a factory order. Tell the fleet team the trade and which of the two constraints is binding.

Questions businesses actually ask
Can I get a Transit with all-wheel drive?
Yes — available Intelligent AWD, and it is the only gas van we sell that offers it. Ford integrated it without raising the load floor or the seat height, so you are not trading loading height for traction. The Sprinter offers AWD as well, but only behind a diesel.
Thanks — good to know.

How much can a Transit carry?
Up to 5,103 lbs, on the T-350HD High Roof extended-length cargo van with rear-wheel drive and dual rear wheels. Every other configuration is lower, sometimes by a lot, and shelving comes out of the number before your stock does. The doorjamb label on the specific van is the only figure to plan against.

Which roof height should I order?
Overall height runs about 82.4–82.9 inches on the low roof, 99.1–101.3 on the medium and 109.6–110.4 on the high. Taller buys standing room and cargo volume; it also decides whether the van clears your shop door and any parking garage on the route. Measure those first — it is the constraint people discover late.

Should I buy the Transit or the Express?
If you are ordering to spec, usually the Transit: it configures far wider and can be had with all-wheel drive. If you need a shelved van off the lot this month, usually the Express, since most of ours arrive already racked. The Express also tows more — 9,600 lbs with the V8 — so a trailer pushes the decision that way too.
Thanks — good to know.

Can the shelving be built in at the factory?
Yes. Ford offers factory-installed trade packages — shelves, bins and equipment mounts fitted on the line — which shortens order-to-delivery and keeps the van on a single invoice. For a bespoke layout, or when you need the van sooner than a factory build allows, an aftermarket upfit is still the better route.

How many Transits do you keep in stock?
Deliberately few — a handful of gas cargo vans at Quirk Ford Augusta. Most Transits we deliver are ordered to specification, because choosing the configuration is the entire point of the van. Tell the fleet team the roof height, length, weight rating and drivetrain you need and they will quote an order against whatever is on the ground.

Tell us what the truck has to do
What you carry, what you tow, whether a body or a plow is going on it — that decides the build. The commercial team specs it, quotes multiple units, and handles factory fleet ordering.
