Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD Chassis Cab in Maine
A chassis cab is a cab, a frame and no bed. You are not buying a pickup with the box removed — you are buying a rated platform for a service body, a dump, a stake body or a flatbed, and the body is the part that does your work.
We stock these properly: fourteen on the ground between Quirk Chevrolet Portland and Bangor, nine of them already carrying a body, and nine currently marked down. If you want the pickup with a bed instead, that is a different truck and it has its own page.
Every unit counted here is on the ground today. We don’t list in-transit or factory-ordered vehicles on this website. Ask the fleet team what’s inbound.
What it means for your business
Cab-to-axle is the number your body builder asks for first
Not wheelbase, not bed length — cab-to-axle, the distance from the back of the cab to the centre of the rear axle. It decides what will physically mount. The 3500HD Chassis Cab comes with 60 or 84.5 inches of cab-to-axle in Regular Cab, and 60 inches in Crew Cab. Get this wrong and the body you have specified does not fit the truck you have bought. Settle it with the body builder before anything else, because every other choice follows from it.
You are buying rating and frame, not a truck with the bed off
The chassis cab carries a maximum 14,000 lb GVWR and 6,047 to 7,329 lbs of payload, against 11,500 lbs and 5,289 on the single-rear-wheel 3500HD pickup we configured. Gross combination runs 24,000 to 40,000 lbs. Dual 18-inch steel wheels are standard, because that is how the rating gets carried, and a heavy-duty locking rear differential comes with it — with a 12-inch ring gear available on the large axle. That is a different vehicle from a pickup, priced from $46,000 before any body.
Power Take-Off is what makes a dump or a crane actually work
The available Power Take-Off Package drives hydraulics straight off the transmission. If the body has a hoist, a crane, a liftgate or anything else that needs real power rather than a battery and a pump, this is the box to tick at order time. It is not a sensible retrofit, and discovering you need it after the body is mounted is an expensive conversation. Tell the fleet team what the body has to do and they will specify it.
Nine of the fourteen arrive already bodied
Between the two stores we have Knapheide service, flatbed and steel platform bodies, Reading and Dejana Dynapro dumps, Unicell stake and van bodies, and a twelve-foot Workport. Those are weeks of upfit lead time and a second invoice you do not pay, and the truck works the day you take it. Five are bare for anyone who needs a specific build — the bodies on ours ran roughly $16,000 to $25,000 each, which is a useful yardstick when you are budgeting one from scratch.
Chassis cab or the 3500HD pickup
If the truck needs a bed most days and a body occasionally, buy the pickup — and two of those currently come with Reading service bodies already on. If the body is the truck, buy this: more payload, more GVWR, the cab-to-axle options to make a longer body fit, and PTO for hydraulics. The engines are shared, so this is not a performance decision. It is a question of what is going on the back and how much of it.
Powertrain & capability
Manufacturer figures for a properly equipped truck. Your specific build will rate differently — confirm the ratings on the unit before you buy a trailer or a body to match it.
Engines
- 6.6L V8 gas
- 401 hp · 464 lb-ft
- Direct injection, 10-speed Allison. Twelve of our fourteen are gas — the usual answer when the truck carries rather than tows.
- Duramax 6.6L Turbo-Diesel V8
- 470 hp · 975 lb-ft
- Available, with an exhaust brake — worth having under a loaded dump on a long grade.
- Power Take-Off Package
- Available
- Hydraulics driven off the transmission for a hoist, crane or liftgate. Order it with the truck.
- Fuel capacity
- Two tanks · up to approx. 63 gal
- The large tank matters when the truck burns fuel working rather than driving.
Hauling & towing
- Cab-to-axle
- 60 in or 84.5 in (Regular Cab) · 60 in (Crew Cab)
- The dimension that decides which bodies will mount. Start here.
- Max GVWR
- 14,000 lbs
- Against 11,500 lbs on the single-rear-wheel 3500HD pickup.
- Max payload
- 6,047–7,329 lbs
- The body comes out of this first — often two tons of it before your load.
- Max GCWR
- 24,000–40,000 lbs
- Truck, body and trailer together.
- Rear axle
- HD locking differential · 12-in ring gear available
- On the available large axle. Dual 18-inch steel wheels are standard.
- Starting MSRP
- from $46,000
- Chassis only. The bodies on the ones we stock ran roughly $16,000 to $25,000 on top.
Which trim for the work
Trim on a work truck is a budget decision, not a luxury one. What we actually have on the ground is marked.
The only way this chassis is sold here, and the right one — a cab that gets shared, climbed into in boots and parked on a site. The money belongs in the body and the rating, not the interior.
Bodies that go on this chassis
This is the chassis the body builders in this region work on every day — Knapheide, Reading, Dejana and Unicell bodies are all on our lot right now. Decide the body first: it sets the cab-to-axle you need, whether Power Take-Off has to be specified, and how much of the payload is gone before you load anything. Chevrolet is explicit that equipment from independent suppliers is not covered by the GM New Vehicle Warranty, so the body carries its own.

Questions businesses actually ask
What exactly is a chassis cab?
A cab and a bare frame with no rear bed, built to have a body put on it — a service body, a dump, a stake body, a flatbed. Chevrolet describes it as a bare-frame truck designed to be upfitted for commercial work, and offers the same thing further up the range in the 4500HD, 5500HD and 6500HD. A utility truck, for what it is worth, is simply a chassis cab that already has a utility body fitted.

Should I buy this or the 3500HD pickup?
If the body is the truck, buy the chassis cab: 14,000 lbs of GVWR and up to 7,329 lbs of payload, against 11,500 and 5,289 on a single-rear-wheel pickup, plus the cab-to-axle options and Power Take-Off. If you mostly need a bed and occasionally a body, the pickup is the better daily vehicle — and two of ours already carry Reading service bodies. The engines are the same either way.

What is cab-to-axle and which one do I need?
It is the distance from the back of the cab to the centre of the rear axle, and it is the first thing a body builder will ask you. Regular Cab offers 60 or 84.5 inches; Crew Cab offers 60. Longer cab-to-axle carries a longer body, shorter keeps the truck more manoeuvrable. The body you want determines it, so have that conversation before you order the chassis.

Do I need the Power Take-Off package?
If the body has hydraulics — a dump hoist, a crane, a heavy liftgate — yes, and specify it with the truck. Power Take-Off drives those off the transmission rather than off a battery, and it is not something to add sensibly after the body is mounted. If the body is a plain service box or flatbed with no moving parts, you do not need it.
Thanks — good to know.

What do you have in stock?
Fourteen, all in Work Truck spec, split nine at Quirk Chevrolet Portland and five at Bangor, twelve gas and two diesel. Nine already carry a body — Knapheide service, flatbed and steel platform, Reading and Dejana dumps, Unicell stake and van bodies, and a twelve-foot Workport — and five are bare. Nine of the fourteen are marked down at the moment.
Thanks — good to know.

Is the body covered by the Chevrolet warranty?
No. Chevrolet states plainly that equipment from an independent supplier is not covered by the GM New Vehicle Warranty and that GM is not responsible for those alterations. GM warrants the chassis; Knapheide, Reading, Dejana or Unicell warrant what they built. Ask who services the body locally before you commit — on this truck the body is the part doing the earning.

Tell us what the truck has to do
What you carry, what you tow, whether a body or a plow is going on it — that decides the build. The commercial team specs it, quotes multiple units, and handles factory fleet ordering.
