Chassis + Body, Ready to Work
Chevrolet Express Cutaway Work Vans in Maine
A cutaway is a cab and a frame with nothing behind it — you choose what goes on the back. That is what makes it the most flexible commercial vehicle on the lot and the one worth thinking hardest about before you buy.
More than half of what we stock already has a body on it: Wabash and Unicell box bodies, Forest River cargo bodies, Knapheide utility. The rest are bare chassis waiting to be specced. Both are at Quirk Chevrolet in Portland and Bangor.
Every unit counted here is on the ground today. We don’t list in-transit or factory-ordered vehicles on this website. Ask the fleet team what’s inbound.
What it means for your business
Buy it finished, or buy the chassis and build it
Finished units are quicker and the price is one number — chassis and body together, already mounted and on the ground. A bare chassis lets you specify exactly the body, door configuration and interior fit-out your work needs, at the cost of lead time. We stock both, which means the decision can be about your schedule rather than our inventory.
Wheelbase decides body length — get it right first
The 3500 comes in 139, 159 and 177-inch wheelbases and the 4500 in 159 and 177. That measurement sets how long a body the chassis will take, so it is the first decision, not a detail. Pick the body length your work needs, then let it choose the wheelbase.
Payload is the reason to look at a 4500
The 3500 rates up to 12,300 lbs GVWR; the 4500 is 14,200. That difference is what a heavy body plus a full load of cargo eats into. If you are carrying dense freight or a long box, the 4500 is often the honest answer even though the 3500 looks like enough on paper.
The body is not covered by the GM warranty
Worth knowing before you sign: GM warrants the chassis, not equipment fitted by an independent upfitter, and says so plainly. The body carries its own manufacturer warranty instead. We tell you which builder made the body on any unit you are looking at so you know who stands behind what.
Powertrain & capability
Manufacturer figures for a properly equipped truck. Your specific build will rate differently — confirm the ratings on the unit before you buy a trailer or a body to match it.
Engines
- 4.3L V6
- 276 hp · 298 lb-ft
- Standard on the 3500 with the 139-inch wheelbase. Enough for lighter bodies on shorter runs.
- 6.6L V8
- 401 hp · 464 lb-ft
- Standard on the longer 3500s and every 4500, optional on the short 3500. What most working cutaways have.
- Transmission
- 8-speed automatic
- With both engines.
Hauling & towing
- Max payload
- 8,920 lbs
- Maximum available. The body comes out of this before your cargo does — which is why body weight matters as much as body size.
- GVWR
- 3500 up to 12,300 lbs · 4500 14,200 lbs
- Truck, body and everything in it. The single number that decides whether a build works.
- GCWR
- 20,000 lbs
- Both 3500 and 4500, if you are also pulling a trailer.
- Wheelbases
- 3500: 139 / 159 / 177 in · 4500: 159 / 177 in
- Sets the body length the chassis will accept.
Which trim for the work
Trim on a work truck is a budget decision, not a luxury one. What we actually have on the ground is marked.
Cutaways do not ladder by trim the way a pickup does — the body you put on it is the specification. Everything we stock is base chassis.
Bodies that go on this chassis
The full-frame design takes utility and service bodies, cube and van bodies, box truck bodies and shuttle configurations. Unicell, Wabash and Knapheide all build for this chassis — and we already have their bodies on units here.

Questions businesses actually ask
What is a cutaway van?
A cab and frame with no body behind it, built so an upfitter can mount what you need — a box, a cube, a utility body or a shuttle interior. You are buying a platform rather than a finished vehicle, which is exactly why it fits so many trades.
Thanks — good to know.

Do you stock them with bodies already on, or just chassis?
Both. Right now more than half our Express Cutaways have a body fitted — Wabash and Unicell box bodies, Forest River cargo bodies, a Knapheide utility — and the rest are bare chassis you can spec. Finished units go to work sooner; a bare chassis gets you exactly the build you want.

Should I get the 3500 or the 4500?
It is a weight question. The 3500 rates up to 12,300 lbs GVWR and the 4500 at 14,200. Subtract the body, then see what is left for cargo. Dense freight or a long heavy box usually points at the 4500 even when the 3500 looks sufficient.

Is the body covered by the Chevrolet warranty?
No. GM warrants the chassis; a body fitted by an independent upfitter carries its own manufacturer warranty and GM states it is not responsible for those alterations. We will tell you who built the body on any unit so you know who to call.

How do I know what body length will fit?
Wheelbase decides it — 139, 159 or 177 inches on the 3500, 159 or 177 on the 4500. Tell the fleet team the body length and type your work needs and they will match it to the right chassis, or source the combination if we do not have it on the ground.

Tell us what the truck has to do
What you carry, what you tow, whether a body or a plow is going on it — that decides the build. The commercial team specs it, quotes multiple units, and handles factory fleet ordering.
