Three-Quarter-Ton Workhorse
Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD for Work & Fleet in Maine
The 2500HD is the truck most Maine contractors land on when a half-ton stops being enough — when the trailer got heavier, the bed is carrying tools and material every day, and a plow goes on the front five months a year.
We stock it group-wide across every Quirk Chevrolet store, new and used, gas and Duramax diesel, from bare Work Truck to loaded High Country. Buy one off the lot, spec one to order, or have a service body or dump insert put on before you take delivery.
Every unit counted here is on the ground today. We don’t list in-transit or factory-ordered vehicles on this website. Ask the fleet team what’s inbound.
What it means for your business
It is a chassis, not just a pickup
The reason the 2500HD shows up on so many job sites is that it takes a body. Pull the bed and it becomes a platform for a service body, a landscape dump, a flatbed, or a crane body — the same chassis the upfitters we work with build on every day. A half-ton cannot do that. Plan the upfit before you buy the truck, because the cab and bed configuration you choose decides which bodies will fit.
Payload is the number that matters, and it is build-specific
Towing gets the headlines, but most businesses run out of payload first — tools, fuel, material, a couple of crew, and a body all come out of the same rating. Payload and GVWR on a 2500HD change with cab, bed, drivetrain and engine, so there is no single honest figure to quote. Tell the fleet team what you carry and they will pull the exact ratings for the build you are looking at, before you commit.
Gas or diesel is a math problem, not a preference
The Duramax costs more up front and pulls dramatically harder. If you tow heavy most days, it pays for itself. If the truck mostly hauls a body and a load around a service territory, the 6.6L gas engine is usually the better business case and the cheaper unit to buy and maintain. We stock both in near-equal numbers so you are not talked into whichever one happens to be on the lot.
Winter is part of the spec in Maine
A 2500HD that plows is a different truck from one that does not — front axle capacity, ballast, and how the plow prep interacts with what else you are mounting. If the truck is going to push snow and carry a body, both need to be planned together rather than bolted on in November.
Powertrain & capability
Manufacturer figures for a properly equipped truck. Your specific build will rate differently — confirm the ratings on the unit before you buy a trailer or a body to match it.
Engines
- 6.6L V8 gas
- 401 hp · 464 lb-ft
- Lower purchase price and simpler maintenance. The sensible pick for service and delivery work that hauls more than it tows.
- Duramax 6.6L Turbo-Diesel V8
- 470 hp · 975 lb-ft
- Buy it for sustained heavy towing — equipment trailers, gooseneck loads, long grades under weight.
- Transmission
- 10-speed Allison automatic
- Standard with both engines.
Hauling & towing
- Max towing, 2500HD Crew Cab
- 22,070 lbs
- This is the 2500HD figure. The 36,000 lb number in Chevrolet advertising is a dually 3500HD and does not apply here.
- Max towing, gas
- 19,080 lbs
- Properly equipped. Your build will rate lower — confirm before you buy a trailer to match.
- Cargo box volume
- 83.5 cu ft
- Standard Durabed, before any body or cap.
- Bed tie-downs
- 12 standard, 500 lbs each
- Enough anchor points to strap a real load without adding a rail system.
Which trim for the work
Trim on a work truck is a budget decision, not a luxury one. What we actually have on the ground is marked.
The fleet and upfit trim. Vinyl-friendly, cheapest to replace, and the one to buy when a body is going on and the truck is a tool.
A WT that a crew will not complain about — more comfort without paying for features a work truck never uses.
The common owner-operator pick: the truck doubles as a daily driver and shows up at customer sites.
Owner and principal trucks. Real capability underneath, but you are paying for interior over utility.
Off-road suspension build. Capable, but the lift and tires work against plow and upfit plans — check before you commit.
Bodies that go on this chassis
Service, landscape and flatbed bodies from Knapheide, Reading and DuraMag are built for three-quarter-ton pickup chassis like this one. Which body fits depends on your cab and bed choice, so settle the upfit before you order the truck.

Where they are
Questions businesses actually ask
What is the payload of a Silverado 2500HD?
It depends on the build — cab style, bed length, drivetrain and engine all move payload and GVWR, and a diesel weighs more than a gas engine, which comes straight off what you can carry. There is no single figure that is true for every 2500HD. Send us the stock number or tell us what you need to haul and we will give you the exact ratings for that truck.
Thanks — good to know.
Sorry that didn't answer it. Want to ask the commercial team directly?
Can I put a service body or dump body on it?
Yes — the 2500HD is a standard chassis for pickup-mounted service bodies, landscape dumps and flatbeds. We coordinate the upfit with the body builder so the truck arrives ready to work. Decide on the body first, because it constrains the cab and bed you should order.

Should I buy gas or the Duramax diesel?
Tow heavy most days and the Duramax earns its premium. Haul a body and a load around a service territory and the 6.6L gas engine is usually the better total cost — cheaper to buy, cheaper to service. We stock both, so the answer can be about your work rather than our lot.

Do you have them in stock, or do I have to order?
Both. We carry 2500HDs across the Quirk Chevrolet stores in Bangor, Portland and Rockland, new and used. If nothing on the ground matches the spec you need, factory fleet ordering gets you the exact configuration — worth it when the truck is going to carry a body for the next decade.
Thanks — good to know.
Sorry that didn't answer it. Want to ask the commercial team directly?
Can you handle more than one truck?
Yes. Multi-unit quotes, municipal bids, upfit coordination across a group of trucks and factory fleet ordering all go through the same commercial team. Tell them what the fleet does and they will spec it.
Thanks — good to know.

Tell us what the truck has to do
What you carry, what you tow, whether a body or a plow is going on it — that decides the build. The commercial team specs it, quotes multiple units, and handles factory fleet ordering.
